Match #14 (30 March 08): 7th Heaven

Red Knights came strolling in and the players all seem to be one size bigger than us. could this benefit us in a 3pm match under the burning sun? yet all pre-conceived notions were thrown to the wind when the match started. individually, these guys are good ball players and even the seemingly obese fellas kept the ball darn well. then why did we end up in 7th Heaven and they went down the 7 gates of hell? perhaps the difference lie in the way the match is played by both teams. Red Knights tried too hard individually and as a team were worn out by half time. we attempted to involve more players in our moves, allowing the ball do the work, making our passes and chances count. that brings to mind an article that chiang gave us some time ago on keeping the game simple. keep it up guys!

for more of the goals, kh has kindly agreed to write an account. watch this space.

Match #13 (22 March 08): 1-0 lead over Techwood (Abandoned)

Err..unlucky match number 13, not the result but the incident to kh. for those who missed the pulsating match on sat, kh was injured in a clash of heads with chuan of techwood. suffered a cut on the head & a dislocated jaw. ambulance called to take him to TTS Hospital. since then, the jaw's been put back (ok, slightly less handsome) & the head's stitched. much better now (and will resume playing this sunday!, did i say much better?). match was abandoned at the point when marinesunday was leading1-0, courtesy of a goal from mike assisted by KH's corner kick. the stat didn't matter, we knew we had them on the day....it's not over!

here are some comments from the team and some keen-eyed observers (players in limbo, pardon the pun, i mean those who'll be coming back strongly soon!)

Match #12 (15 March 08): 2-3 loss to OVS

after a winning run of 7 in which we scored a minimum of 4 goals each game, finally someone's got to make us start all over. the jinx field, not the side as chye wryly observed. we had beaten OVS at JJC, but never on their spiritual home of VS. still, with our confidence sky high, we started the match at a high tempo and winning many 50-50 balls. the team kept compact for a good 20 minutes and we took the lead. st watched the run of gan as kh kept a defender busy, released a through ball for gan to run into, held off the attentions of a defender and scored. as we continued to pressure, leng received a lovely right wing cross, chested, and as the ball take ages to drop, he unleashed a volley which kumar, inspired by the presence of karen, tipped over majestically. soon our fast tempo had to wilt under the scorching sun and OVS equalized. OVS switched the ball around well and put the ball into the box for old indian striker. still with much to do, he showed that old age can't deny experience and technique as he buried a stiff low grounder with panache.

second half was the decider and all 3 goals were a result of the teams making the mistake under relentless pressure. OVS dominated the first part and took the lead as they poured men into the box and capitalized on a mistake from keeper. we had our own stroke of fortune as a good cross from yc was turned into a beautifully placed finish by an OVS defender. then as we started to regain the initiative and pressed for a winner, OVS scored again as a forced clearance from our left ended up as a pass into our box for their most dangerous player. he needed no invitation to win the game for OVS.

so it leaves us now hungry for the next match against techwood. a week to get psyched up!

Match #11 (8 March 08): 4-2 lesson for Nitro

Vindication was certainly the word as a pair of cheap China-made boots was finally put to deadly effectiveness and did what the flashy Mizuno boots couldn’t. The downhill Xiao Long Bau man, heavily ridiculed for his indifferent performances since his stint in Shanghai, showed what he could do upon returning to home shore, as he grabbed MS’ first hat-trick of the season.

It took some time for us to settle down on the pitch as we were adjusting our feet to the natural pitch, after pampering ourselves on the well manicured astroturf in past matches. Passes went astray and most ended up anywhere except where we wanted the ball to be. And it took a lucky break to settle into our rhythm.

Teck Chye weaved his way but a certain shot turned out to be a wayward kick. KH pounced on the uncertain and indecisive Putih Campur (though they are better known as Nitro) defence to shoot the loose ball past the keeper, who remained deeply rooted on his ground throughout. 1-0 and that settled some nervy starts.

Putih Campur pushed the line a bit too far up and they paid for it dearly. A high ball allowed Gan to sneak in from the blind. Referee ignored the incessant offside calls by Putih Campur and Gan advanced into the box before rounding the keeper and shooting into the open goal.

PC hardly threatened MS goal in the 1st half and 2-0 stood at half-time.

The 2nd half was somewhat a grab-and-smash affair by both sides. Teck Chye wasted an opportunity when he shot sky-high after charging well ahead of the pack to face only the keeper. On the other hand, Seah courageously came off his line to block a certain goal attempt by PC.

The re-introduction of KH ignited the match. He seemed to make the left flank his turf as he time and again launched his assaults on that side of the pitch. First he broke free on the left to receive a pass but his final cross intending for Mike at the far end was a letdown. He then beat a defender and advanced well down the left before crossing in a measured beauty for Mike at the far post. But it was not meant to me, Mike could only conjure up the Miss of the Season with the goal at his mercy and the keeper hopelessly out of position. A through pass by See Chiang set KH galloping away on the left. He beat the advancing keeper to the ball and slotted the ball into the open goal from a tight angle. 3-0.

Just when it looked like a stroll in the park. PC hit back with a sucker punch. A quick breakaway exposed our complacent backline. Their speedy forward had the entire right fairway to his own before cutting left into the box, leaving Weng Kwan stranded. He unleashed a fierce left-footer that Seah could do nothing about it. Deficit was narrowed 3-1.

KH extended MS’ lead with his hat-trick goal. Mike, in the 6-yards box, trapped the cross in from the left. KH, definitely on the loose and exhibiting all his predatory instincts garnered from hunting the xiao long bau in Shanghai, let fly a half volley that could have bulged the net. 4-1 now and he must have been inspired by Torres!

PC would not lie low though. Where they could not get into the box, they tried from distance. A direct free-kick way outside the box caught Seah napping as he watched the ball sailed past him.

MS held on, with the midfield holding up the line and dictating the tempo, to finish the match 4-2.
