It's not often that we get referred to as the younger team, us with the grey strands and dodgy knees. But our opponents bestowed upon us that honour by the end of a tortured match that was played under the hot sun.
Like young men on a Friday night at Downtown East looking for a fight, or Teck Wah on his honeymoon, we were rampaging bulls in the first half. Before the match, defence showed attack how to score and so it was with our first goal. Off a corner, our opponents cleared the ball to the edge of the box. Rock did well to control it, made a shimmy to the right and then sent in a rocket which zoomed past their keeper. 1-0.
The game continued in the same vein. Our opponents were skilled and fit but no match for the crisp passing orchestrated by our midfielders. A move down the right sent Teck Wah through. He stretched - loads of practice on the wedding night - and stopped the ball before steering it past the keeper. 2-0. Then Chye sent a delightful ball into the box which Mike did well to get to and shoot past their keeper. 3-0. we were coasting.
Our opponents clawed one back when a diagonal ball was met by their striker who headed it past Brandon. Gan who stood in as a keeper had little to do before that. 3-1. We were not done.
Mark came in, pulled to the right and sent in a cross to far post which Wah did well to head past the keeper. 4-1.
Our finishing rate however abandoned us in the second half. Shots went agonisingly wide or were saved by the keeper. Until Simon picked up yet another poor clearance off a corner to do a Rock by steering the ball past everyone. 5-1. But our opponents fought back valiantly. One hopeful punt on the left had Brandon back pedalling but he couldn't stop the ball from hitting the net. 5-2.
Then a free kick took a wicked deflection and the ball sailed over Brandon's despairing dive. 5-3. Smelling blood, our opponents threw everything into attack but MS held on until the final whistle. 5-3.
